Hey! I’m Trin, owner of AllegoryOfWords— a blog dedicated to all things literary. My journey with reading has been a bit tumultuous until quarantine. At the age of nine, I immigrated to California from Viet Nam and, like most diaspora community members, I struggled with fully grasping the new language while desperately clinging onto my native tongue. Through books emerged a sense of escapism, allowing me to simultaneously learn this foreign tongue while revealing worlds I was eager to dive into, escaping the difficulties of being an immigrant, woman of color in the U.S. I learned English through Harry Potter, The Grimm Sisters, The Hunger Games, Divergent, all of John Green’s books, Deltora Quest, Eragon, and more. Fantasy was, obviously, my favorite genre! And it still is to this day.

But it was disheartening to read about characters that do not look like me, to the point of feeling…
